Impact: Jackie Ponce
Jackie Ponce is a student at the University of Colorado Denver, College of Arts & Media, majoring in Fine Arts with an emphasis on illustration. With a minor in Literature, she hopes to become a Children's Book Illustrator. Being born as a Mexican-American has taught her to appreciate both sides of her, her cultural heritage and the arts. From early childhood, she has been drawing and hopes to reach out to future generations with her art of storytelling as she once was. She hopes to amplify underrepresented voices, celebrate diversity through her art, and help future artists with their passion for the arts.
Her illustration professor introduced her to a unique opportunity to travel with the Biennial for Mexico City Art Week, and with her love for the arts and Mexican heritage, she knew it would be a perfect trip for her.
Although it was not her first trip to CDMX, Jackie was able to see the city with a fresh perspective, one focusing on art through fairs and gallery visits. She really enjoyed seeing beautiful places that she may not have had access to with a family visit.
Jackie hopes that this trip could really be a special opportunity for more students to visit from the CAM department at CU Denver. With students from illustration, animation, filmmaking, music and other disciplines, it could provide a really enriching experience being exposed to such a unique culture, and young artists can “find a little part of themselves here.”
